The Best Cake Shops in Denver: Top 5 Picks for Your Event

We extensively test and research all services we review. Here's why you can trust us.
  • Flavor Profile & Moisture: We looked for cakes with balanced, deep flavors that stay moist for days, avoiding those that rely solely on sugar.

  • Design Capability: We assessed the artistic skill level, ranging from clean, elegant lines to gravity-defying custom sculptures.

  • Menu Variety: We checked if the shop offers a diverse range of flavors, fillings, and dietary options like gluten-free or vegan.

  • Customer Service: We evaluated the ease of communication and the general friendliness of the staff during the ordering process.

Denver challenges your palate with more than just craft beer; a serious dessert culture thrives here, too.

You might need a show-stopping centerpiece for a wedding or simply crave a Tuesday afternoon sugar fix. Either way, the Mile High City offers a bakery that fits the bill.

However, with so many ovens firing up across town, identifying the spots that truly deliver on flavor and design can be tricky. I’ve scoured the city, fork in hand, to find the best cake shops in Denver that deserve a place on your party planning list.

These five picks consistently impress with their artistry, texture, and ability to turn a simple celebration into a memorable event.

How much does a cake cost in Denver?

Pricing varies significantly based on the complexity of your design and the size of your guest list.

A quick, reliable cake for a casual birthday often starts around $16, climbing to $85 for higher-end ingredients or simple decorations.

On the other hand, custom designs or tiered wedding masterpieces require a larger budget, often landing in the $200 to $500 range.

Large-scale wedding receptions with over a hundred guests can easily push costs above $440. Ultimately, the price tag reflects your choice between a simple sweet treat and a customized work of art that demands hours of skilled labor.

I stopped by recently to inquire about a custom design and found their portfolio genuinely impressive, with attention to detail on their sculpted cakes that rivals what you see on TV competitions.

The Cake Bar distinguishes itself with a menu that is entirely plant-based, offering a haven for guests avoiding eggs or dairy. They solve the problem of serving guests with dietary restrictions without sacrificing flavor or texture.

Additionally, their “Cake in a cup” service and mobile bar make them an excellent choice for receptions where grab-and-go treats keep the energy moving.

I tried their lemon cake a few weeks back. The crumb was incredibly moist, and the citrus punch felt bright and authentic, and I wouldn’t have guessed it was vegan if I hadn’t known.

Supporting a business that prioritizes inclusivity in their ingredients adds a nice layer to the experience.

However, note that they cap their daily orders at 24 slots. You must plan ahead and secure your date early to ensure you get a cake from this popular kitchen.

It was a custom order that did not disappoint aesthetically or flavor wise

This is an overdue review, but I ordered a lemon & strawberry birthday cake in June, and I haven’t stopped thinking about it since! It was a custom order that did not disappoint aesthetically or flavor wise. And the best part about The Cake Bar is that you get to support a Black, Woman, LGBTQIA+ small biz while enjoying the most delicious cake of your life! I mean, they made a cake for RZA, so I think that says it all…

Updating because I since ordered another cake that was truly iconic and deserves a permanent spot here!

This will be a must-stop place

We have visited The Cake Bar several times to enjoy their cake in a cup, and it has always been delicious. However, this review is specifically about the custom cake we ordered. The order form was straightforward and easy to complete. We requested a simple mini chocolate cake with chocolate buttercream for my mother-in-law’s birthday. I have to say, it was the most moist cake we have ever had! My mother-in-law couldn’t believe it was vegan. We will definitely return for future birthday cakes! For family and friends who visit us in Denver, this will be a must-stop place.

This dedication shines through in their complex wedding cakes and their signature tea cookies, which are a local favorite.

When I visited to grab a box of those famous cookies, the scent of butter and vanilla bean greeted me at the door. The quality is undeniable, particularly if you enjoy rich, European-style pastries like their chocolate mousse cake.

However, catching them open can be a challenge. Their retail hours are strictly limited to Fridays and Saturdays, so you have to time your visit carefully. Plan your weekend errands around their schedule to ensure you don’t miss out on these treats.

Pros

  • Professional pastry chef team
  • Complimentary custom messages
  • Gluten-free options available

Cons

  • Retail hours limited to Fri/Sat

They had a nice selection of different desserts and cakes

Popped up on Saturday afternoon looking for chocolate desserts. Ended up with 4 different tastes including chocolate mousse cakes. They had a nice selection of different desserts and cakes at that time of a day which I really appreciated. The employee was friendly and helped us quickly. Prices were competitive.

The cakes were too sweet for my taste but well made and delicious. Next time, I will probably out for a full-sized chocolate mousse cake because I liked it most.

10/10 experience!

10/10 experience! Gateaux made the most beautiful and delicious cake for my husband’s law school graduation. Our friends and family are still raving about it weeks later! Very professional, timely, and helpful in the design process. Couldn’t recommend more!

Their bilingual service ensures clear communication for a wider range of customers, making everyone feel comfortable and genuinely welcomed from the moment they walk in.

I also picked up some Alfajor cookies here for a family gathering, and they were a hit thanks to their fresh texture and perfectly balanced sweetness. They vanished from the table almost immediately; the buttery texture is unmatched.

5. Wooden Spoon Cafe & Bakery

Website: https://woodenspoondenver.com/
Address: 2418 W 32nd Ave
Contact: +1 303-999-0327
Hours: Wed – Sun: 8 AM – 1 PM

Wooden Spoon Cafe & Bakery defines the neighborhood gem, focusing on small-batch baking where the team starts fresh daily at 1:00 a.m.

Their reputation rests on this dedication to freshness and community connection, serving locally sourced coffee alongside house-made breads and pastries.

It feels like a place where the staff genuinely recognizes the regulars, and when I went in for breakfast to try a slice of their carrot cake, it struck that difficult balance of warm spice and cream cheese without becoming cloyingly sweet.

The atmosphere is homey and inviting, encouraging you to slow down and linger.

The trade-off for that popularity is the wait, as during peak hours, you might stand in line for up to 30 minutes. If you have a tight schedule, arrive early to beat the breakfast rush.

Pros

  • Pastries baked fresh daily
  • Locally sourced coffee partners
  • Online ordering for sandwiches
  • Dietary-conscious options

Cons

  • Long wait times during peak hours

Customer Reviews

Easy to call and place an order a few days in advance

Searched for carrot cake, Wooden Spoon came up as highly recommended and it was absolutely delicious. Carrot cake isn’t usually my favorite cake, but this was a great cake – a great balance of sweet, spice, and the right cream cheese icing. No raisins, obviously that would be a travesty. Easy to call and place an order a few days in advance. They even inscribed it for me (candles were separate). I was temped by all of their other delicious pastries so I would be back to try them!

It was NEXT LEVEL, easily the best carrot cake in Denver!

Randy Moyer got me a carrot cake from here for my birfday! It was NEXT LEVEL, easily the best carrot cake in Denver!! The cream cheese frosting was perfect and the pecan coating was a special touch. The staff enjoyed it immensely and we can’t wait for another CAKE. Thanks Jason!!
